Reckless Driver Apprehended After Crash And Foot Pursuit

02/20/2024

Cass County Sheriff Robert Sorenson reported that on the evening of Friday, February 16, 2024, deputies responded to a report of a reckless driver dangerously speeding and weaving in and out of traffic on Hwy 75. As deputies were en route to the reported location, one deputy observed a black Mitsubishi sedan traveling southbound on Hwy 75 at speeds reaching 96 MPH. However, before the deputy could safely turn around and approach the vehicle, the Cass County Sheriff's office received another report of a vehicle crash at the Casey's General Store near the intersection of Hwy 75 and Rock Bluff Rd.

Upon investigation, deputies confirmed that the crashed vehicle matched the description of the speeding vehicle they had observed earlier. The driver had fled the scene on foot. Emergency services, including Murray Fire and Rescue, Cass County Medics, and a Plattsmouth Police Department K9 unit, were immediately dispatched to the scene and initiated a search for the driver.

Deputies eventually located and apprehended the driver, identified as 29-year-old Marco Barcenas of Nebraska City, on Hwy 75 near Kenosha Road as he attempted to flee the area on foot.

Barcenas faces multiple charges, including Speeding, Willful Reckless Driving, Driving with a Suspended License, DUI, Refusal of a Breath Test, Leaving the Scene of a Property Damage Accident, and Felony Criminal Mischief.

Sheriff Robert Sorenson commended the swift and coordinated response of all involved agencies in bringing this incident to a safe conclusion. He also emphasized the importance of public cooperation and reporting in maintaining safety on Cass County's roadways.
