Cass County Sheriff Robert Sorensen advised that on July 3rd, 2024, at approximately 9:14 AM, deputies responded to a 911 call reporting CPR in progress for a possible drowning near Belgrade Court at Beaver Lake, Plattsmouth.

The Cass County Sheriff's Office, Murray Fire and Rescue, Cass County Emergency Medical Services, and Cass County Emergency Management Agency were promptly alerted and responded. Lifesaving measures were attempted, and Richard Pflugfelder, 82 years old from Colorado, was transported to Bellevue Medical Center. Unfortunately, he was pronounced deceased. A death investigation is ongoing, with assistance from NE Game & Parks and the Sarpy County Sheriff's Office.

Pflugfelder was reportedly visiting relatives in the area. Initial witness statements suggest he was kayaking without a lifejacket when the kayak capsized.
